  1.                      HOW THE KERATOMETER WORKS

  3. With the keratometer there is a four aperture disk.  Light passing through the top and bottom aperture form the central undeviated image of mire pattern seen by the examiner.   The  image seen on the left passes through the left aperture and through a prism that causes the second image (left image) to be formed.  The top image seen by the examiner passes through the right aperture and is deviated vertically to form the top image.

  5. The top and bottom apertures are 
  6. smaller since they both contribute 
  7. light to the central image while the 
  8. two side apertures are larger since 
  9. each one forms just one image.  This 
  10. makes all the images the same 
  11. brightness.
